Repair vs. Replace Calculator by Haynes Heating & Air Conditioning
Compare your average monthly excess energy spending and repair budget with an illustrative replacement payment.
Starting estimate: 2,000 sq ft × $0.10 = $200/month in total home energy spending.
Starting estimate uses $0.10 per square foot per month. Actual electricity and gas costs vary by home, weather, rates and usage. Savings and repair forecasts are estimates, not guarantees.
Enter your estimate. We model one repair every two years; this is an assumption, not a prediction.
$125 is illustrative, not a quoted or approved financing offer.
Adjust forecast assumptions
50% is an editable allocation assumption, not a measured bill share. Exclude fixed charges and non-HVAC usage from the amount assigned to HVAC.
Optional. Added once, separately from future repairs in years 2, 4, 6 and so on.
Use your proposal. Payments beyond the forecast are not included.
Starting assumptions: 50% of home energy spending allocated to HVAC, 10 years, one repair every two years, 25% lower HVAC energy spending and 5% annual energy-price growth compounded after year 1. These are editable illustrations, not guaranteed savings, repair frequency or rate increases. The starting payment scenario is $125 × 120 months = $15,000; installed price and APR are not established.

Method and independent guidance
Year 1 uses your total monthly energy spending × the HVAC share × 12. Each later year grows by the entered annual rate. Replacement energy is reduced by the entered savings percentage. Future repairs occur at the end of every second year at the entered cost; a separate immediate repair is added only once. Average avoidable cost = (excess energy + old-system repairs) ÷ forecast months. Replacement payments are counted only within the entered term and forecast, then averaged over the same months.
The savings assumption applies only to the HVAC portion, not the whole bill. Fuel switching, such as gas heat to a heat pump, needs a separate assessment of gas and added electricity costs. This is not a complete ownership-cost or payback analysis. It excludes maintenance for both systems, replacement repairs, down payments, fees, balloon payments, rebates and costs not entered. Any repair coverage is subject to actual warranty and maintenance terms.
